NECA Godzilla 1954 12" Head-to-Tail Action Figure Review

NECA makes a comeback into the Godzilla figure collectors market by introducing their latest figure that is based on Godzilla’s original incarnation (1954). How does this toy fare on its own?

Godzilla 1954

The first thing admired about this toy is Godzilla’s overall design. His body appears quite bulky, but his skin is also very saggy, as if stunt actor, Haruo Nakajima, is actually inside. This sort of imagination raised the figure’s novelty higher, which is a good thing.

NECA has also managed to capture some great detail of Godzilla’s skin texture, head, fins, claws, individual teeth, and toes on this figure. However, due to a manufacturing error, the bendable tail has its wire sticking out at the tip. Of course, this problem may not happen to everyone.

The color scheme follows how Godzilla looked in black and white film. Thankfully, NECA decided to heavily dry brush a matte coat of light grey paint over a base coat of glossy dark grey. The result left the figure not looking too shiny, while accentuating the sculpted details. Godzilla's teeth, claws, toes, and fins were colored lighter grey. His eyes are white with black pupils.

Conclusion

NECA’s Godzilla 1954 figure is the best toy they made so far. Not only does the look capture most of the Kaiju’s likeliness, the range of articulation seems like a far better improvement from NECA’s previous Godzilla figures, not including Godzilla 2014. There are a few production errors on this particular figure, but they are not a big deal and not all figures will be this way.

  1. I was waiting for you to review this guy, lol. This figure is my holy grail out of NECA's works, and is the one figure I hope to get out of them all. It's a shame that yours' tail has that wire sticking out. Maybe that can be fixed or something.

Back when they were making the first Godzilla film, the suit's actual colour was brown. Wonder how that would look on this figure? Would be pretty cool to see.

    1. Hi Joesiph! Hope you've been well my friend. The delay is honestly my fault. This figure slipped through my radar, as I was busy keeping tabs on the release schedules of X-Plus and other figures only. I had no idea Godzilla '54 was already out until two weeks ago. I meant to get my order in on the release date, but by the time I placed my order, I was already a week late.

I'm glad you enjoyed the review, and I highly encourage you to add this figure to your collection. Godzilla 1954 is the best figure NECA has made so far. I love the new direction they took with the paint job and the range of articulation. He looks much better in person. The tail issue is a shame, but is something I am in content with. I just won't fiddle with it often.

If they did reissue this figure with suit accurate colors, I'd like to see two tones of brown with the dominant, lighter color having a nice matte finish, just like they did with this figure.

    2. Just when we're done talking about it, my Mother, who lives over in LA, gets me this guy for my Birthday yesterday. It's truly an amazing figure, and has become the holy grail of my collection.

It also surprised me, he's heavier than the NECA 2014 Godzilla. for me, that just adds to its charm. Mine's tail is also in perfect condition, no wire sticking out. It's still a massive shame that yours is like that. Maybe you could fix it or something.

Pictures really don't do this figure justice. It's beautiful, amazing, and truly a must have for any Godzilla fan. Now just to wait for NECA to release a 1955 Godzilla Raids Again figure!

    3. Congratulations Joesiph! I'm pleased to hear you are enjoying your figure as well. If NECA does release a Godzilla 1955 figure, I'd jump on that instantly, assuming the promo pictures and prototype were as great as Godzilla 1954. Have fun posing your new figure and I wish you a belated Happy Birthday!

  2. I got my NECA Godzilla 1954 but for some reason, the bendy wire tail on mine is not holding it's pose, no matter how I pose it. Does my figure have no bendy wire in the tail or is the wire just too weak to hold a pose?

    1. Thank you for submitting your question! From the information provided, I think there is something wrong with Godzilla’s tail. As shown in the Extra Photos section, the tail is supposed to hold a pose every time it is manually bent at any angle. The wire rigged inside is quite thick and shouldn’t be able to self-correct itself. If the tails straightens out perfectly after being bent around, that could mean that there isn’t a wire in there at all.
