MMPR Season 1 Vol. 1 & 2 is Morphinominal!

Growing up in the 90's was certainly awesome, and perhaps the best reason for that was the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers!

For those who aren't familiar with MMPR, An evil sorceress Rita Repulsa and her gang of loyal henchmen were freed on the Moon when two astronauts opened their dumpster prison during a mission in space. Since then, Rita's mission was to destroy the nearest planet, which happens to be Earth. Zordon soon discovered Rita's presence and ordered Alpha 5 to teleport "five teenagers with attitudes" from Angel Grove and appoint them as the Power Rangers, five superheroes that harness their Dinozord powers to defend the Earth from any threat.

Since bringing back anything nostalgic became a recent trend, Shout Factory inevitably brought back the first season of MMPR, but in two separate volumes as a cheaper route for their target market. What is to like about this set is that you'll immediately be brought back to memory lane, enjoying all of the great moments from fights to interesting cliff hangers. In contrast, the one thing you'll probably criticize about this show is the weird editing that goes on in the show's first few episodes. As most of us already know, Saban Entertainment borrowed footage from Kyroryu Sentai Zyuranger series, while re-shooting some scenes with their own American actors to westernize the series. As a result, some scenes sort of seemed random, or was not quite put together well because you can clearly tell that two different things were spliced together. One perfect example of this case is episode 2 titled, High Five, where Rita unleashes a small rocket to open up a time gate in "Angel Grove," but the reused stock footage shows the rocket rolling through a city in Japan.

A rocket passing through Japan...er...um Angel Grove.
Another view of the streets.

How about episode 7, Big Sisters, when Maria falls into the hands of Megazord. That scene switched between two different actresses, and even though Saban did their best to recreate the scene, seeing a clear view of the Japanese girl's face as she was saved by Megazord made the whole thing hilarious.

Girl #1.
Girl #2.

In closing, if you loved the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers when you was a kid, this DVD set is an easy buy for you. Each volume goes for a pretty cheap price and is available in Walmart, Barnes & Noble, or any other outlet that sells DVDs.
