Mothra is one out of two figures released in Diamond's (X-Plus) Wave 4, the other being Godzilla 2003. Big thanks to John Stanowski and Flossie's Gifts and Collectibles for giving me another chance to buy this figure in time for the first production run.
Design & Details
This version of Mothra was featured in the movie, Mothra (1961). This film marks the debut of Mothra, in both evolution stages, but some say that Godzilla vs. Mothra (1964) raised this daikaiju to super stardom.
The first incarnation of Mothra certainly separates herself from other future mock ups, through her own body structure and color, and X-Plus has passed those critical features on this figure.
This version of Mothra has highly detailed feelers, bristles, flaps, deep creases, bumps, scratches, and other noticeable markings. The bottom of Mothra’s body sports a grainy looking muscle tissue on each segment.
However, one out of many key components that make the first Mothra so unique is her set of four caterpillar legs underneath. X-Plus has perfectly sculpted those small legs that bend in two angles as they extend to the ground. Also, the segments of Mothra’s body appear a little fattier and bulkier than the others.

Mothra has a certain arc and bend that seemingly reminisce a moment when she searched throughout Tokyo, Japan in hopes of finding the Shobijin, who have been kidnapped by a greedy businessman, Clark Nelson, and his cronies. This decision gave a simple figure a lot more character and appeal.
One cool, and only articulation on this figure, is the ability to open and close those mandibles. However, the inside of Mothra’s mouth wasn't painted black or brown. Instead, there’s a khaki tone similar to Mothra’s body.
There are some noticeable seams in between Mothra’s segments, one near the head and another near the middle. Although they appear quite obvious, they still don’t detract the joy from this figure.
Paint Job
Mothra sports an impressive paint job that accurately makes this version very unique. Mothra is painted light khaki with brown shadowing. There are also blackish, brown dots that span throughout her body. All dots vary in size, and some have really hard edges. The mandibles and front legs are also colored blackish brown, while Mothra’s eyes are light blue.
Size Comparison
Conclusion
Considering the price of this figure being a lot lower than Godzilla figures, and the amazing work that X-Plus has done in their creation of this collectible masterpiece, one should not think twice about buying Mothra. The visuals are stunning and that extra, but small, bit of articulated mandibles makes Mothra even better.
